Back in the dark old days of the 1990’s, when processor speeds were low (compared to today), and memory requirements were stringent upon developers to be ULTRA efficient, there was a burgeoning community referred to as the “demoscene”, where assembly (close to machine code) programmers would get together with artists and musicians (who used the old-skool sample “trackers”) to create “demos”. These were the height of pushing computers to the limit of their capabilities, all in the service of art. Art, music and programming came together to create impressive demos of the cutting edge of technology.

Being children of the 90’s, we here at Synthtube recall with fond, impressive memories, the most famous of the many “groups” who created these masterpieces. The group called themselves “The Future Crew”, hailing from Finland – these guys never failed to impress, and consistently showed the world that computers could be harnessed by artists of all stripes to create narratives that inspired, that moved beyond the code, and into the realms of “art”.

An interesting bit of trivia – 10-15 years on, one of the two musicians for “Second Reality” as featured in this story, “Skaven”, was actually the composer for the music in the game “Bejewelled 2″. For those not in the know, Bejewelled 2 is the hit casual game (250 million US $ and counting) from PopCap Games. So next time you’re playing Bejewelled 2, have a think about where these guys started, and think of the Future Crew.

Enjoy the low-fi goodness of “Second Reality”.

One Response to “Second Reality”

  1. Brendan Ragan Says:

Andrew Sega (necros) who often remixed Skaven and Purple Motion’s tunes got a remix onto a delerium album (Chimera, and the song is “After All”) :)
